
Short-wave or Medium-wave? Getting your IR lamps right for textile drying
There’s nothing worse than pulling a roll of fabric off the line only to find the surface is scorched but the core is still damp. It happens more than you’d think. Usually, it’s because the system was spec’d out on paper without actually considering how the specific fabric reacts to heat.
Let’s talk wavelengths
Short-wave IR is like a powerhouse. It hits the material with high energy and gets things hot—fast. If you’re working with synthetic blends or thin coatings, this is your best bet. The energy just dives deep into the fibers. Medium-wave is a different beast. It has a special relationship with water molecules—it basically hunts them down. For heavy cottons or anything drenched from wet-processing, medium-wave is usually the way to go. You get a nice, even dry and you don’t have to worry nearly as much about burning the surface.
The reality of quartz and heat
We use high-purity quartz for these tubes because it can take the shock of powering up without cracking. But here’s the thing: quartz is still glass. It’s fragile. If your production line is vibrating or your brackets are loose, those tubes are going to snap. Simple as that. Then there’s the heat flux. A high-wattage short-wave lamp packs a massive amount of energy into a tiny space. That means your cooling fans can’t be an afterthought; they need to be sized right. If the housing gets too hot, you’ll kill the filament and the tube will start to cloud over.
The trade-offs
There’s no such thing as a “perfect” lamp for every job. Short-wave gets you up to temperature in a blink, but it can be aggressive. You might over-dry the outside before the inside even realizes it’s being heated. Medium-wave takes a bit longer to get going, but it gives you a much more controlled cure. One last tip: check your connectors. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve seen a lamp fail early just because of a loose terminal creating a hotspot. Match the wavelength to the weight of your fabric, make sure your cooling is solid, and you’ll be in good shape.
