
Shortwave, Mediumwave, or Twin-Tube? Let’s figure out which IR setup you actually need.
If you’re curing coatings on metal, you know the struggle. You’re balancing speed against quality, and if you get the heat wrong, you’re either looking at a part that isn’t cured or a topcoat that’s literally bubbling in front of you. The real trick is picking the right waveband. Shortwave (SW)is like a blast of heat. It hits the surface hard and fast. If you’re running a high-speed line and need things moving now, this is your best bet. It’s instant. But if you’re working with thick metal or a heavy powder coat, shortwave can be a bit too aggressive. That’s whereMediumwave (MW)comes in. It doesn’t just sit on the surface; it sinks deeper into the part. It gives the metal time to soak up the heat, which means you won’t scorch the top layer while the bottom is still cold. Then there’s theTwin-Tubesetup. Think of this as a way to cheat the system. You get double the emitters in the same amount of space. You aren’t making the machine wider, but you’re packing in way more power per square inch. It’s a great way to get a massive punch of heat without taking up your entire shop floor. Now, here’s the catch: all that power creates heat. Lots of it. If you go with high-wattage SW lamps or a twin-tube array, your cooling system has to be on point. If your fans aren’t up to the task, you’ll start warping your housings or ruining your reflectors. It’s a trade-off. You get a faster cure, but your curing tunnel is going to feel like a sauna. So, how do you actually choose? Go with shortwave for thin films and when you’re in a rush. Stick with mediumwave for the heavy-duty industrial stuff where you need that deep heat soak. And if you’re tight on space but need to hit high temperatures quickly? Go twin-tube. The best way to decide is to look at your line speed. If your parts are flying by too fast for mediumwave to do its job, switch to shortwave. On the flip side, if you see bubbles forming on your topcoat, you’re probably hitting it too hard—back off to mediumwave or just move the lamps further away from the part.
