
Getting Your PET Preform Heating Just Right
If you’ve ever dealt with uneven wall thickness in PET blow molding, you know it’s a nightmare. The trick is all in the heat. We use shortwave halogen infrared lamps because they just get the job done faster than those old quartz heaters. They punch right through the plastic. That means you aren’t stuck with a preform that’s scorched on the outside but still cold in the middle. It speeds up your cycle times, and honestly, it just makes the whole process smoother. Let’s talk power. Most of these machines are beasts, running on 220V or 400V to push between 1500W and 3000W per tube. We go high on the wattage because when you’re running a high-speed line, you can’t afford to wait for the heat to ramp up. Whether you’re using 300mm or 400mm tubes, you’re getting a really concentrated hit of heat. But here’s the catch: your power supply has to be spot on. If you under-volt these lamps, you’ll end up with cold spots and a pile of rejected bottles. Nobody wants that. The build quality matters. We make these lamps out of high-purity quartz glass. Why? Because these things take a beating from thermal shock. Some of our tubes even have a special coating that bounces the heat back toward the preform, so you aren’t wasting energy. As for the plugs, we stick with R7s or Sk15 connectors. They’re the gold standard for a reason. When a lamp finally burns out, you can just pop it out and slide a new one in. No rewiring the entire oven, no downtime, no headache. A few things to watch out for. These lamps put out a massive amount of heat. Like, a lot. If your cooling fans or airflow aren’t up to the task, you might actually warp your machine frame. Plus, if the air just sits there and gets hot, your lamps won’t last nearly as long. And one last pro tip: check the tension on those R7s sockets. If the connection is loose, it creates a hotspot that can literally melt your housing. Just make sure they’re seated tight. It’s the only way to keep things running 24/7 without something catching fire or failing prematurely.
