Short-wave lamps are great for a quick hit, but they’re superficial. Medium-wave radiation is different. It digs deeper. That’s why it’s the go-to for things like curing, drying, and PET blowing. It just gets the job done more thoroughly. The guts of the thing At 550mm, the tube is sized to spread heat evenly across a decent amount of workspace. We fill these with halogen gas for a reason: it lets the tungsten filament run hot without evaporating and dying on you. It keeps the lamp alive longer. But here is a pro tip:Watch your power supply. Match your wattage and voltage exactly. I’ve seen people try to “over-volt” a tube to squeeze out more heat. Don’t do that. You’ll fry the filament in no time. Quartz and Connections We use high-purity quartz for the envelope. Why? Because it can handle a massive thermal shock without cracking, and it lets the infrared energy fly through without getting blocked. Depending on what you’re running, we can give you R7s or Sk15 connectors. They’re basically drop-in replacements for most industrial ovens. You can get them wired up fast, but please—make sure those contacts are tight. A loose connection isn’t just a nuisance; it creates hotspots that can literally melt your sockets. The trade-offs Nothing is perfect. Medium wave gives you a steady, deep soak, but it doesn’t hit peak temperature as fast as a short-wave lamp. Your cycle times might be a bit longer, but you get much better uniformity in return. One last thing. Because a 550mm tube puts out so much heat, your reflector plates have to be spotless. If they’re pitted or dirty, you’re just wasting energy. Instead of the heat hitting your product, it ends up heating up your machine frame. And nobody wants that.
