
Swapping Your 300W Halogens for LEDs
If you’re still running 300W halogen lamps, you know exactly how they feel. They’re bright, sure, but they’re basically space heaters that happen to give off light. Most of that energy is just wasted heat. Switching to LEDs changes that. You get the same brightness—or better—but you stop paying to heat the room. The heat thing is a big deal. See, halogens get scorching. When you swap in an LED, your fixture is suddenly going to run much cooler. For most of us, that’s a win. But here is the catch: if your setup actually relies on that lamp to keep something warm, you’re going to notice it’s gone. You get the light, but the heat disappears. Fitting them in Most of these LEDs are built to be “drop-ins.” The goal is to avoid the nightmare of rewiring your entire production line. We keep the footprint and the connectors the same so you can just pop them in. But keep an eye on the drivers. This is where things usually go sideways. If the LED driver isn’t a good match for your voltage, you’ll end up with annoying flickering or, worse, you’ll fry the diodes. It’s a pain to fix, so get the voltage right the first time. The trade-offs Now, don’t get me wrong—LEDs last forever compared to glass filaments. But they have a weakness: they hate extreme heat. If your lamp is sitting right next to a PET blower or a curing oven, you can’t just use any LED. You need a beefy heat sink. If the heat has nowhere to go, the internal temperature spikes, the light dims, and the board dies. You’re basically trading a fragile piece of glass for a sensitive circuit board. Just make sure your power source is stable. A few voltage spikes can toast an internal driver in seconds, and that’s a headache nobody needs.
